When fishing bites: Understanding angler responses to shark depredation

Shark depredation, the full or partial removal of a hooked fish by shark before it is landed, anecdotally increasing in United States. Perceptions depredation anglers and fishing guides may influence their behavior have cascading effects on sharks recreational fisheries. However, to date, these perceptions not been broadly quantified. To better understand how respond fisheries, we used an online survey open saltwater North America, distributed electronically via social media platforms. Of 541 respondents, 77% had experienced nearshore pelagic fisheries last five years, with more commonly reported southeastern Emotional responses were significantly different between guides, latter feeling intense negative emotions. Behavioral changes response such as targeting harvesting sharks, driven largely emotional threats target species, while protect species varied positive angler demographics. Guides predominantly concerned about increased mortality loss trophy from population. In fact, 87% when clients overwhelmingly that has effect livelihood. Overall, results can be help inform strategies reduce accounting for values stakeholder groups, particularly those advocating conservation.
